Sands

Sands is a very wealthy mercenary with a reputation. He owns a miniature medieval-style castle, and, unusually, has no one in it but him. No one works with him, nor does very much fill the unused space of his castle. His castle essentially consists of a dining room, a throne room, and many generic, empty rooms. No one is sure of why he bothered to purchase a small castle if he didn't intend to use it (perhaps not even Sands).

Much is unknown about him, such as his real name, why his alias is "Sands", and why he doesn't make use of his leisure time.

Distinguishing Features

Sands has a very formal taste, preferring to wear a black tuxedo with a bow tie, and a matching top hat. Less conventional features are such as him always seen wearing a black, Russian gas mask, and the tone he speaks always in. Typically, the way he sounds when he speaks is in a "high energy, imperative, yet cheerful" manner (as if he were always flustered). He also seems to be apathetic of morals, and other human values.

He is armed with a 9mm, semi automatic handgun, equipped with a suppressor and a laser sight (put together for stealth assassination proficiency).

Significance to the story

Similar to The Faceless Clan, one of Sands' customers is Eykan. The most significant of Eykan's requests for Sands was the kidnapping and taking hostage of Misha Moria, as a succeeded attempt to distract Oskar Eisenengel.

[Somehow], Misha ends up being killed (despite the hostage plan), and Oskar ragingly encounters Sands, questioning him about his motives. Sands responded by explaining that he is merely a mercenary, and does what he is payed to do, irrelevant of whether or not people outside of the deal like it. Oskar remained in utter dismay, but he said he understood and left Sands be.

Much later in the story, Oskar forms a semi-organized military, and storms Sands' castle, finding that he is in the same place that he is usually in. Sands gets held at gunpoint, while Oskar vengefully explains what he is doing. Oskar mentions that if he were the one with the castle, and Sands were the one in need of one (in Oskar's case, for a military base), Sands would have done the same thing. He also brings up the fact that Sands was solicited to capture Misha, and abstain from giving out her location. After a brief and high pressure conversation between Oskar and Sands, Oskar shot Sands in each of his limbs, and then in the eye (killing him, of course). As Oskar's soldiers stand, appalled at the brutality of the killing, Oskar walked toward the entrance of the castle and said "Someone clean that shit up."
